The Conversation Before the Conversation

Hello, Reader,

There’s a part of a hard conversation that happens before you ever sit down with the other person.

It happens in your head.

You start rehearsing what might happen.

“They don’t respect me.”

“They’re going to get defensive.”

“This is going to turn into an argument.”

“They’re never going to change.”

And before you’ve said a single word, you’ve already decided how the conversation is going to go.

That’s where things can get tricky.

Because when we walk into a conversation carrying a story about the other person, it can affect our tone, our body language, what we hear, and how quickly we react.

So before your next hard conversation, pause.

Ask yourself:

What do I know?
What am I assuming?
What do I actually want to accomplish?

You don't have to ignore the problem or convince yourself everything is fine.

You just want to make sure you’re walking into the conversation with clarity instead of a story.

That is what preparation can do.

It helps you slow down, get grounded, and choose how you want to show up instead of letting your anxiety choose for you.

And sometimes, that small shift is what makes the conversation go completely differently.

If there’s a conversation you’re already rehearsing in your head, let’s talk about it.

I offer a free 15-minute Hard Conversation Strategy Call where we can sort through what’s happening, what you want to accomplish, and how you can approach the conversation with more clarity and confidence.

Because you don’t need to become fearless to have hard conversations.

You just need to feel prepared.

What Conversation Would Change This If You Had It This Week?

Hi There, Reader, Yes, I want Coaching! There’s probably a conversation you’ve been thinking about more than you’d like to admit. You know the one. The conversation you keep telling yourself you’ll have when things calm down. The one you’re rehearsing in your head because you’re worried about how the other person will react. The one you know needs to happen, but you’re not sure how to start without making things worse. So you wait. You think about it. You prepare for it. And sometimes,...

Hi There, Reader, Yes, I want Coaching! Have you ever caught yourself thinking…“I’ll bring it up next week.”“After this deadline.”“After the meeting.”“When things calm down.”It’s easy to keep putting off a conversation when you’re not quite sure what to say or you’re hoping the situation will somehow resolve itself. But:Waiting doesn’t always make a hard conversation easier. Sometimes, it just gives uncertainty more time to grow.If the conversation matters today, delaying it can give...

What if the conversation isn’t the problem?

Hi There, Reader, Yes, I want Coaching! Most hard conversations don’t happen because someone wants conflict… They happen because something needs clarity. And here’s where I see so many strong leaders get stuck: They hesitate, soften too much, or avoid it altogether—because they don’t want to create tension. But in reality? 👉 Lack of clarity is what creates the tension. When you clearly communicate expectations and the real impact of what’s happening, something powerful shifts:...
